Climbing evergreen, lianoid, glabrous, dioecious, with cirri and hooks on the stems and leaves.
The leaves are coriaceous, shiny, cordate or spear-shaped, with very variable dimensions, and they have two tendrils at the base of the stalk. There are curved prickles on the edges and on the bottom blade, along the main veins.
Small scented flowers, gathered in bunches at the axilla of the leaves, followed by red and then blackish berries, very decorative
